Kunming likes to party

Ivan, Jennifer and I woke early on November 6, 2008.  We were taking a bus from Dali to Kunming, China.  We had breakfast and then we walked to town.  We went to the travel agency.  It turned out that the 9:10 am bus was broken.  The next bus would leave at 10:30 am.  Ivan wanted to leave as soon as possible.  There was another travel agency next door.  There was a bus leaving at 9:40 am through the new travel agency.  Ivan got the money back.  Then, he booked new tickets through the travel agency next door.  We had to…

Massages and Pizza in Dali

We woke up on Tuesday, November 4, 2008 in Dali.  We went to get breakfast at the guesthouse.  It was good.  We switched to the Song room before heading out.  We rented bicycles.  We went with an English couple (who we’ve seen in Chengdu and Mt. Emei) and a guy to the Three Pagodas.  It wasn’t that long to get there.  They charge too much to get in so we just took some pictures outside. The other people were biking to the lake.  It’s a long 2 hour ride.  Ivan and Jennifer wanted to go back.  The bike seats were…

Staying at Mama’s

Ivan woke up early on November 1, 2008.  He had breakfast and then left at 8:30 am.  He was trekking up the Tiger Leaping Gorge with two backpackers who were also staying at Mama’s.  Ivan said he wasn’t sure about the weather.  So, he’d be back tonight or tomorrow night.  Jennifer and I slept for a few more hours.  We woke up around 11:25 am.  Jennifer tried to turn on the lights but they didn’t go on.  We went downstairs to get some breakfast.  Ivan told us earlier that the banana pancakes were delicious.  We both ordered a banana pancake. …

Lovely Lijiang

We arrived in Panzhihua around 8 am on October 30, 2008.  We took a long taxi ride to the bus station.  We bought bread, bananas and dried tofu for breakfast.  We got on a bus heading to Lijiang.  It was going to be a 7 hour ride.  We were the only ones on the bus.  Ivan was watching shows on the laptop.  Jennifer slept a lot.  It was a bumpy ride.  We would jump in the air every now and then.  We arrived in Lijiang at 4 pm.  Ivan, Jennifer and I went to Panba Guesthouse to check in.  We…

Climbing Mt. Emei and a Scary Monkey

Ivan, Jennifer and I checked out of the Teddy Bear Hotel on October 28, 2008.  I wish I could have taken Ted traveling with us.  We’re off again to another adventure.  All this moving around takes a lot out this cute monkey!  We put our luggage in the luggage storage room.  They lent us walking sticks since we were headed up the mountain.  Jennifer’s walking stick was an umbrella.  It looked like it was going to rain today.  Jennifer said that her calf hurt.  We walked to the bus station next door and it took us to the bottom of…

Spicy Opera

We walked to the Wenshu Monastery on Sunday, October 26, 2008 from Sim’s. It was a nice area to walk around in.  We saw some great relics, a garden and halls. There was some great big statues inside.  We went to find the teahouse.  It’s bottomless tea.  There are guys who walk around and refill your teacup.  You couldn’t get more than half done before it was refilled again. We had a nice afternoon.  We stopped by a noodle place for lunch.  It was a variety of noodles and then one of the ladies would add different spices to the…

Panda Garden

Our train arrived at 2:30 pm in Chengdu on October 24, 2008.  It was thirty minutes early.  We were going to get picked up from somebody from the hostel.  We got a taxicab to the hostel instead of waiting for the ride.  We checked in at Sim’s Cozy Garden Hostel.  This hostel is really big.  It has a large garden filled with a dog, rooster, pigs, fish and kitties. There’s a game room with a ping pong table and a pool table.  This is the best hostel we’ve been to so far.  The rooms are nice with a big bed…

A Monkey good time!

We had some lunch at the 7th Heaven Cafe on October 22, 2008.  We then walked around town.  Ivan was looking for a place called Monkey Jane’s.  It’s a rooftop bar.  We finally found it.  It has a sign but it’s a little hard to see.  We decided to chill here for a little while.  Ivan and Jennifer had a Liquan beer (local beer).  I had a monkey drink called Monkey Fizz.  It’s basically a banana juice with a fancy name. It’s a great bar with nice scenery of Yangshuo.  We just relaxed while reading magazines and playing games.  Ivan…

Mud Bath, Cooking and a Light Show

We went to 7th Heaven cafe for breakfast on October 19, 2008.  Ivan and Jennifer had omelets.  I had a banana pancake.  We were going to rent a moped for the day.  The place to rent mopeds and bicycles was right next to the cafe.  We ate outside.  Ivan and Jennifer kept getting bugged by ladies trying to sell books or jewelry.  Jennifer was getting annoyed since she wanted to eat in peace.  There was a lady named Kelly who wanted to be our tour guide.  She was pointing out places we could go on her map.  Ivan really wanted…

Monkey traveling upside-down near a cave

Ivan, Jennifer and I went to the Reed Flute Cave in Guilin on October 17, 2008.  Right when you walk into the area, you get pestered with people trying to sell you books, postcards or a bamboo ride.  Ivan said later to one lady.  For some reason they kept bugging Ivan and not Jennifer.  Most of the locals think Jennifer is Chinese because they just automatically talk to her in Chinese.  She is part Chinese actually.  The caves are beautiful inside. They add different colored lights to make it look cool.  The Chinese seem to name every rock formation things…
